Sofa's History

Sofa was invented in the end of the 16th to the early 17th century. At that time in Europe, the most popular farthingle chair is one of the earliest sofa chair. Until the 20th century a couch referred to a long upholstered seat with one end sloping, high enough to provide a back and head-rest. Into the 19th century a couch was especially a seat for a lady.Further back in ancient Roman society, the couch was found in the dining room.

The word couch is hardly used in England, where sofa is far more normally used. Since 19th Century the couch has become connected with Freudian psychoanalysis. Sigmund Freud originally used the couch as a tool to aid his hypnosis of the patient. Lying down as a therapist or psychoanalyst of some kind may be an important aspect of his or her method for interpreting dreams.

Couches or sofas are usually in the living room and other lounging areas of a given abode. If you are re-decorating your home, you may consider purchasing a new sofa. Sofas come in various styles and have been very popular throughout history. Today sofa is often positioned in relation to the TV set in a family room.

I am surprised that the term goes back to the 16th century. Not that the show "The Tudors" is credible, just come to think of it, I cannot recall any sofas in all the movies on that time period in England.
